Before A Fire
Being proactive and prepared for an emergency, can save your life or the life of someone you love. Often we forget how important is to have a plan in place if should find yourself in a home emergency.
A smart way for you to remain prepared and in control is to create and practice a fire safety plan. In the event of a fire, remember that every second counts. Escape plans help you get out of your home quickly and safely. Twice each year, practice your home emergency plan and make sure everyone in your household knows what to do in an emergency situation.
Some tips to consider when preparing this plan include:
Find two ways to get out of each room in the event the primary way is blocked by fire or smoke.A secondary route might be a window onto a neighboring roof or a collapsible ladder for escape from upper story windows.
Make sure that windows are not stuck, screens can be taken out quickly and that security bars can be properly opened.
- Practice feeling your way out of the house in the dark or with your eyes closed. Teach children not to hide from firefighters.
Household Fire Safety Audit
Most fires occur in the home. To minimize this danger, we recommend that a household fire safety audit be conducted and a fire escape plan be developed.
Are all electrical appliances and outlets in a safe condition? Check for frayed cords, overloaded lighting circuits, etc. If you are uncertain about the condition of your electrical appliances or household service, have a professional evaluate these units.
Are all flammable liquids stored safely in closed containers in a well-ventilated cool area? Cleaning with flammable liquids should be avoided.
Are fire-hazardous materials (e.g., matches) well out of reach of children?
- Are furnaces and wood-burning appliances properly installed, clean, and in good working order? Have a professional evaluate these appliances.
